HTTP, HTTPS and the padlock sign

What is the difference between HTTP and HTTPS - Does the padlock on the browser matter?

Using HTTPS rather than HTTP is important - you want the padlock icon. HTTPS means the connection to the website is encrypted, so that hackers will have a much harder time monitoring what you are doing and stealing your passwords. HTTPS also provides some authentication of the website so you are viewing - it isn’t perfect, but it does make it at least a little harder for a hacker to impersonate a website.
