How many new vulnerabilities were discovered in 2019? Q9 from #GCAchat 21 May 2020)

(@EMEA_GCA) Year on year size and scope are increasing, 100% increase between 2016 - 2017 and further 20% between 2017 - 2019. System dependent - without #patching you remain vulnerable to historical and new

(@basquecscentre) Response: According to @NIST, more than 17,000 vulnerabilities were identified in 2019. Further information: NVD - Statistics

(@Tech4GS) Response: Great question—this is actually a a real challenge in #cybersecurity. Companies like @prevailion are exhibiting tools to get a clearer and more real-time sense of compromises around the globe.

But getting an accurate sense of this number is challenged by the fact that there is an entire cottage industry based around finding, keeping, and then selling vulnerabilities. If interested, the “vulnerabilities equities process” is a useful jumping off point.
